As a fan of sci-fi, Robocop is right down my alley. But a Robocop reboot? Well, I’m skeptical. I am a fan of Joel Kinnaman, who shines on AMC’s The Killing, but I don’t see enough of despair that makes the original such a knockout and it just seems like Hollywood is pushing out unnecessary reboots. Judge Dredd was rebooted, but made more sense since the original was an abomination and the reboot was a worthy participant into the sci-fi playbook. But how do you build on the Robocop franchise, which is more acclaimed and notorious? We will see.
Quelling my doubts are the supporting cast members. Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson are all top notch actors and will surely add to the presence of the film. And the themes present in the trailer seem passably interesting. Rings of how “the human element will always be present” in the new figure of justice and “illusions of free will” was a theme present in the original as well.
Robocop is set to be released February 7, 2014.
