Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is Hercules. Now, he is playing him in a film. Finally! Hercules looks like it has all the makings to be, well, a good Dwayne Johnson action flick. I’m not expecting it to be epically great or find its tone through its storytelling, even if it has a shot straight out of Gladiator, which was also ripped off in 300. No, all I want is for the script to be competent and for The Rock to kick some bad-guy butt!
Brett Ratner is behind the helm for this one. Ratner, of Rush Hour fame, has a “type” when it comes to films. And by “type” I mean there seems to usually be a good amount of humor, excluding X-Men: The Last Stand, which was his only stab into comic book flicks, thankfully. But where could the humor come from in this movie? Yes, Johnson is charismatic and a better actor than he gets credit for, but is Hercules funny? Methinks not.
Quote of the trailer:
“We cannot deny who you are. The Gods will punish you for it.”
That seems to pretty much sum up the movie. Hercules’ parents were killed. Robert Baretheon-like vengeance is sought and Hercules fights back, or something like that. And he fights giant lions and wears their heads, like a boss – or like the myth – either way though it’s badass. I think I know my costume for Halloween this year.
Hercules clashes into theaters on July 25, 2014. Prepare yourself for a God.
