The final trailer for the latest X-Men movie dropped last week. Of these superhero movies getting forced down our throats, the X-Men movies are my favorite. There is something about a group of misfits banding together to save the day that intrigues me. First Class is such an underrated film, in that, it set up this franchise by creating interesting and important backstories for the array of characters. It made them relevant to the issues of today, even though the plot too place in the past.
However, the second movie changed the discussion a bit and took the focus away from the relationships and made it more about the destruction. For me, the relationships are what made the first movie so enjoyable, but the second, although still enjoyable, took a much darker and more cynical route.
Which brings us to the third film in the franchise. I think we can all tell they have ramped up the destruction a notch and it seems they are going even further away from what I find most interesting. I guess they don’t have my point of view in mind when making these films. I’m still interested in seeing it, so I guess I am also a hypocrite.
With that said, there are still aspects that I am looking forward to seeing. Anytime Michael Fassbender graces us with his presence, it is a pleasure and his is fantastic as Magneto. The torment and hate really comes through with his performance and it is the best part of these movies.
Also, Jennifer Lawrence. I mean, what else do I need to say? What a queen. And Sophie Turner, Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones for those people living under a rock, is Jean Grey. Which begs the question, will we see Sophie dress in normal, civilian clothes? As much as I love the Thrones, she is a good looking gal, who is constantly hidden under about 19 layers of garb.
Lastly, Oscar Issac plays the villain, which I am amped for. That dude is awesome. It’s funny, when he was announced as the Apocalypse a few years ago, most people did not know who he was. Then he appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now he’s everywhere, and for good reason. The only downside is that he is in heavy make-out/CG, so now sure how much of that gorgeous punim we will get to see.
X-Men: Apocalypse: hits theaters later this month. May 27, 2016.
