Darren Aronofsky is a weird dude who makes weird movies. His first three movies are all very surreal. Like, I don’t think The Fountain even had a plot. And then he started making movies that at least definitely had a script. But however you feel about his movies, you always get the sense they are wholly his vision and he is able to squeeze out every ounce of realism from the performances as possible. And this next one, Mother!, seems to fit right up that alley.
So, the cast is great. Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pheiffer are featured in the trailer and a pair of Gleeson brothers (Domhnall and Brian) are also listed in the cast, as well as Kristen Wiig. An eclectic group, but one with obvious talent.
One aspect, though, that I am caught up on from the trailer is being sold that Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence are a couple, when they have over a 20 year age gap. C’mon, Darren, you couldn’t cast a younger male lead? Or an older female lead? I do not buy the premise that those two are realistically a couple, which then leads me to question the realism of the film and if I even want to see it.
Mother! hits theaters on September 15, 2017.
